Mars Rover Kata – Part 1

Meeting Topic

We’re trying something a bit different for the next few meetings

  1. We’re going to work on a slightly longer kata over multiple meetings.
  2. We’ll incorporate some kind of user interface to make the problems seem more real and less academic.

The Mars Rover kata (see the Resources section below) is something we sort of started one meeting last year, but ran out of time. We’ll get a fresh start this month, then publish what we get done on Bitbucket (similar to GitHub) so that you can work with it on your own if you’d like to outside of the meetings.

There will be one laptop connected to the projector, so no need to worry about bringing anything. We’ll take turns writing tests and making them pass.

If you’re looking for some inspiration, look in the Resources section below and check out the post (first of five so far as of this post going live) by Erik Dietrich about coding up a chess game using TDD. I’ve found the videos to be very approachable for any level of developer.

The meeting will be on Thursday, May 15 at 6pm. (Hop over to the event page for this meeting to RSVP.) As usual we will have food and refreshments. If you have special requests for food (e.g., vegetarian-friendly), please leave a comment below.

We will be in the same location as last month, which is the 3M office building off Pellissippi Parkway. The address is 804 Innovation Drive. As you pull into the parking lot, stay to the right, and park in front of the building.

Important: Our venue requires an list of people in advance that will be attending so that guest badges can be created. Please RSVP by 12:00pm on Thursday so you can get on that list.
