Introduction to Ruby Koans

Ruby Koans logoMeeting Topic

A concept that’s fairly prevalent within the software craftsmanship mindset involves learning different languages and environments. So far, most of our meetings have involved C# and Visual Studio. In my opinion there is no one correct language/platform/environment for all problems; however, stepping outside your comfort zone can expose you to ideas, patterns, and ways of doing things that otherwise wouldn’t have been on your radar.

For this month’s meeting, Gregory Ostermayr will walk us through the basics of the Ruby language TDD-style. We’ll be making use of the Ruby Koans (see the Resources section below) to explore Ruby. Less talk and more coding is what this is all about in this beginner-friendly tutorial.

To get the most out of the experience, you’ll probably want to bring a laptop with Ruby already installed and the Ruby Koans already downloaded prior to the meetup. (The link below covers how to do those things.)

The meeting will be on Thursday, February 7 at 6pm. (Click here to RSVP.) As usual we will have food and refreshments. If you have special requests for food (e.g., vegetarian-friendly), please leave us a comment below.

This month’s meeting is being held in the usual place (at the Aerotek office on Cedar Bluff). The address is 408 N. Cedar Bluff Rd. Suite 140 on the first floor of the first office building behind Papa John’s on Cedar Bluff.
