Craftsmanship Revisited

Meeting Topics

The format of our meetings usually involves us practicing test-driven development (TDD) using code katas. This past month, a few items showed up on my radar that reminded me why this is so important, and that getting at least one opportunity to practice these skills is better than none. (Probably some would argue that once a month is too infrequent.) I’ll share a short video about test-driven design as well as some highlights from an article about why katas matter.

For the discussion portion, I’d like to recap some topics that were discussed during an open spaces session on software craftsmanship that occurred at this year’s CodeStock conference. Be thinking about what craftsmanship means to you personally; there’s no right or wrong answer, and I think everyone would benefit from hearing ideas from peers.

There are plenty of “standard” katas out there that we haven’t yet tried, but in an effort to present an alternate source of practice material, I’ll share a tip about where to get other sources of inspiration. We’ll even learn about how this can help you practice applying design patterns.

(No need to bring your laptops — we’ll have the same setup as last time with one laptop and a projector.)

Logistics

The meeting will be on Thursday, July 12th at 6pm (Click here to RSVP). As usual we will have food and refreshments. If you have special requests for food (e.g., vegetarian-friendly), please leave us a comment below.

We’ll be meeting at the same location as last month — Claris Networks which is near the Bearden area of Knoxville.

From I-40 East:

  • Take exit 383 for Papermill/Northshore off I-40. Keep right at the exit, turning on to Papermill Drive.
  • Take your first right onto Weisgarber Road, and go back under I-40.
  • Next, turn right at your first light onto Lonas Drive. Look for the Claris Networks sign about 800 feet from Weisgarber on the right. Turn right, and the building is all the way up the hill.
