It’s Not Always Technical
Meeting Topics
Our group motto is to “suck less.” So far we’ve learned some ways to do that technically (i.e., better coding techniques, methodologies, tools). Sometimes we’re more comfortable dealing with computers — they’re deterministic and we feel we have some sense of control over them. But there’s more to our jobs (and life) than computers. Those carbon-based lifeforms we call users, managers, and coworkers can be tricky to understand. We’ll learn about some tips for sucking less when interacting with other humans.
After the talk, we will spend about 10-15 minutes as a group talking about “eating like a bird and pooping like an elephant.” (If you have no idea what that means, come to the meeting and find out!)
To conclude, we’ll apply our knowledge of interacting with other humans by doing some pair programming — a code kata involving the Greed dice game. Bring your laptop with your favorite development environment set up.
Logistics
The meeting will be on Thursday, May 10th at 6pm (Click here to RSVP). As usual we will have food and refreshments. If you have special requests for food (e.g., vegetarian-friendly), please leave us a comment below.
We have a new venue this month! We’ll be meeting at Claris Networks which is near the Bearden area of Knoxville.
From I-40 East:
- Take exit 383 for Papermill/Northshore off I-40. Keep right at the exit, turning on to Papermill Drive.
- Take your first right onto Weisgarber Road, and go back under I-40.
- Next, turn right at your first light onto Lonas Drive. Look for the Claris Networks sign about 800 feet from Weisgarber on the right. Turn right, and the building is all the way up the hill.
From I-40 West:
